Kamala Beach: Overview and Things to Do
Exploring Kamala Beach
On the west coast of Phuket lies Kamala Beach, a quieter beach for those who want a calmer option to visit for peaceful beach relaxation. There are a number of things to do around the area, and we will cover some exciting options. But first, let’s learn a little bit more about Kamala, the area in which Kamala Beach is located in.
An overview
The Kamala sub-district is located in the district of Kathu in Phuket. The area is located in between Patong and Surin Beach, and is a haven for visitors who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of nearby districts. The most convenient way to get to Kamala and Kamala Beach is by car. Kamala Beach is a 2 km stretch of clean beach that is livelier in the south nearer to Patong, and quieter towards the north. There are various things you can do on the beach itself, and also in the surrounding locality.
Things to do on Phuket’s Kamala Beach
On Kamala Beach, you can lay down a towel on the pristine sands so you can lay back and soak in the sunshine while watching the waves gently lap the shore. If you prefer, you can also rent out mats and umbrellas from vendors on the beach. For an even more relaxing experience, you can even explore some of the small stalls along the beach to enjoy a mind-melting body or foot massage that suits your preference. The cost of these massages are very reasonable, so we recommend to getting one whenever you are by the beach. Of course, you can also engage in the usual water activities such as surfing, swimming, snorkelling, diving, paddling, and so on in the ocean.
If you want to do something near the beach but not quite on it, then one of the things you can do do at Kamala Beach, Phuket is to visit Wat Baan Kamala. This beachfront classic Buddhist temple was rebuilt in 2004 after the tsunami and houses a gorgeous garden, bell tower, small temple areas, and more within the complex. It’s an excellent spot for photography in the late afternoon, though you can come any time of the day for some spiritual peace. Another historical spot you can visit is the Tsunami Memorial Park located in the middle of Kamala Beach, which was built to remember the devastating effects of Phuket’s 2004 tsunami incident which severely affected the locals. It is only a small park but worth a visit if you are in the area.

Other things to do near Kamala Beach
A popular entertainment option nearby Kamala Beach is the Phuket FantaSea cultural theme park, whose main highlight is a variety show that happens after 9 p.m. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t come early to the venue. In fact, you can and you should! Admission includes a buffet dinner for you to enjoy before the show, as well as plenty to do and see from the time of opening around 5.30 p.m. This is an experience suitable for both adults and children, so it’s a perfect option for a family-friendly outing.
Those who like to shop can visit Kamala’s Friday night market which opens from 3 p.m onwards, where you can find a vast array of fresh food items for sale such as vegetables, fruits, meat, seafood, and most importantly, authentic local Thai food. Besides this night market, there are also several local and international dining options in the Kamala area, as well as several places for nightlife. However, do note that since Kamala is not quite as upbeat as Patong, most establishments will probably close earlier in the night compared to similar places in Patong and Phuket Town.
